Description

The invitation to be a co-editor of an issue of this publication dedicated to contemporary photographic practices was a challenge in terms of finding a concept or an idea that would reflect the zeitgeist of today’s photography. Starting from the assumption that the real world is hyper-populated with photographic devices and equipment, while the virtual world is oversaturated with images, we wanted to emphasize, maybe for the first time in a systematic manner in the Romanian cultural context, the specificities of contemporary photographic practices. I believe that Post-photography is the arts’ reply to the latest developments in digital technology that allow the easy production and the rapid sharing of images on social networks or through specific online media.

For this issue of the publication we have invited a few theorists, curators and artists whose texts or artistic practices are relevant in the context of post-photography. Some of them create images starting from visual material produced by others (found footage), other start from real images and manipulate them using editing software or construct realities that they photograph afterwards. This subjective mapping has its relevance at this moment, the autumn of 2015: I am aware that as I write, other artists, someplace else, rediscover their cameras on the studio shelf and set out to represent reality in a novel way…
